In the past, websites have been difficult to create, difficult to maintain and too costly. We wanted an easy way to operate our own websites. Our colleagues wanted a website they could control and they didn't want to pay by the hour to do it. We answered their call. ComfyPage was designed to put website owners back in control. Create and update your website for a low cost. That's what we want for ourselves and for the world. We use ComfyPage for our websites so we know it works.

Why the name ComfyPage?

After a three day search for a product name (with an available domain) we came up with ComfyPage. It described what we're achieving; a comfortable website experience. None of the hassle and technical gobbledegook. It's a website the way it should be.

ComfyPage is a tool to help you create simple, smart and super quick websites known as a content management system. It is designed to be easy to use and to handle extremely large amounts of traffic. You can use it for absolutely any purpose provided it doesn't break any Australian laws

You can download ComfyPage and install it on a server of your choosing. You can use ComfyPage for as long as you wish for free.

ComfyPage is a product from Affinity Software. We're a company made up of two brothers in Perth, Western Australia. Our office is a cell in an old prison. Strictly speaking it's only big enough for one but we squeeze in.

I first thought ComfyPage was a good idea when I thought "wouldn't it be great to have a website that let you instantly edit any part you wanted." My first vision was a normal looking website with little edit buttons everywhere. You click edit, make your changes and save. The changes are instantly published. At this stage, ComfyPage has stayed true to that idea. ComfyPage websites look like normal websites but plenty of power lies behind the Site manager and Edit page links at the bottom of each page.

I'm a graduate engineer and computer scientist. I spent a number of years teaching absolute beginners how to use computers. So I have the technical skills and an understanding of normal computer users. That understanding boils down to "you can't be sure of how users will act. The only thing you can be sure of is they won't do what you expect." The lesson I learnt is that people don't think like me :).

When I'm not ComfyPaging I write a comic strip called Laugh It Off. The laughitoff.info website is of course a ComfyPage. I look back now to how I managed the website before ComfyPage and it makes me cringe. Some say that laughitoff.info is a boring website. It's true there is no nice graphic design but that's the type of person I am. It's beautiful because it does the job it's meant to do. No more and no less.

I enjoy watching and performing stand-up comedy. Bill Hicks is my favourite comedian. I say he's my main inspiration not my main influence. He inspires me to do things the way I want to but he isn't an influence because I don't want to do it the same way he did. I recommend you check out your local comedy night. Local comedy (and particularly amateur comedy) isn't always funny but it is always worth watching.

Since getting my computer science degree Ive worked in areas as varied as satellite imaging, mining/oil and gas and finance. Along the way Ive completed a third of a masters (if they want people to stick around they shouldnt put all the interesting stuff at the beginning).

When not busy with Affinity Im usually attempting to keep fit while avoiding getting any kind of tan. One day Id like to have visited every country on earth. For more about me you can read my blog.

Add-ons are great for adding extra interactivity to your site. Make your ComfyPage even better by letting visitors send you a message, email your website to their friends, pay you through your site, earn money from ads and a whole lot more.

To use an add-on select one using the add-on selection box while editing a page or margin.

You can unsubscribe as well if that's what you want.

Instead of having one website for your whole organization it's possible to create a number of smaller sites. Each site can focus on a particular topic, issue or group. Optionally, each site can be built and managed by different people.

A ComfyPage that has moved to its own domain, for example mypetshop.com, can create other sub-sites called sub-domains. A domain with sub-domains attached is called a portal.

Create a community of ComfyPages that work together. The parent ComfyPage can link to all the sub-domains and all the sub-domains can link to the parent ComfyPage and each other. It creates a strong network that benefits your search engine rankings.

Each sub-domain is its own ComfyPage. That means each sub-domain can be operated independently by anyone you choose.

Control the branding of your ComfyPage portal. The parent ComfyPage can optionally control the template of its sub-domains. That means you can control the branding of the sub-domains.

Easily create sub-domains. There are three ways to create sub-domains. The portal administrator can create sub-domains one by one, the portal administrator can allow their organisation members to create sub-domains by giving them the portal password or if you have a lot of sub-domains to create please contact us at ComfyPage.

There are many free and easy to use website building tools available for non profit organisations.

Some can even collect donations online, help you keep in touch with members and donors and make your organisation look more professional.

The key to success is leveraging off the supporters you already have to tap into their wider unrelated networks of possible donors to or supporters of your cause.

A workable model which benefits non profit organisations is to provide each of your existing supporters with a ‘no-cost’ website for use as they see fit.

ComfyPage allows you to quickly and easily create websites using one of our templates, the look and feel of your site. However, if you want something more specific for yourself or a client you may want a custom template. With a custom template there is nothing about your site you cannot control. The site structure, layout and colour scheme are all completely configurable to suit your needs.

ComfyPage is free, open source software for managing websites. It is easy to use and designed to cope with extremely large amounts of traffic.

You can Download ComfyPage or you can get it from the Subversion repository at Google Code.

Once you have the ComfyPage software you will need two more things to make your website:

hosting

Hosting is space on a computer server that is accessible via the Internet. Although there are many hosting companies, most of which are probably fine, we have used Host Gator for years and have been very happy with them.

a domain name

A domain name is the address of a website (like comfypage.com). There are many domain registrars who can help you register a domain name. Planet Domain and Go Daddy are both generally adequate.

Once you have the ComfyPage software, hosting and a domain name you have everything you need. Software, a place to put it and an address.

If this is sounding too complicated and you just want to quickly get something online you may want to consider a one stop website shop like Weebly!

After many years of providing people around the world with a place to express themselves we have made the difficult decision to close down the ComfyPage server. Fear not as, while the ComfyPage server will disappear, we are releasing the ComfyPage software to the world. This mean you can still use ComfyPage to run your websites however you will now need to provide your own hosting.

We have also added the ability to backup your pages and files from your existing site. To do that log into your site, go to the Site Manager and click on Backup which is just above the list of pages. This will download a zip file to your computer containing everything you need to recreate your site.

Here is a checklist of things you will need to do:

1. Backup your existing site
2. Register a domain name if you don't have one already. If you already have one you will need to reconfigure it to point to your new host.
3. Set up hosting
4. Copy the ComfyPage software into your hosting space
5. Copy the contents of your backup zip over the "site" directory within the ComfyPage code (on your host).

The ComfyPage server will finally be decommissioned on the 1st of August so make sure to retrieve any sites you want to keep before then.
